Atlantic Crossing information MAD MAX 2018

ARC – ATLANTIC RALLY FOR CRUISERS

”The ARC is a ‘must do’ for many sailors, and attracts over 200 boats and 1200 people
every year to sail 2700 NM across the Atlantic from Gran Canaria to Saint Lucia.
The ARC is for everyone; families with children, tough racers, cruising couples, big
boats and modest boats. Crossing the Atlantic together, but having their own
adventures. More than just a boat race, the ARC is about friendships made ashore in
the two weeks of pre-departure activities continued over the radio net at sea. It’s about
arriving in Saint Lucia to be met on the dock with a rum punch and a chilled beer,
knowing you have achieved something fantastic – crossing an ocean on a sailboat.”

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What should we expect from a crossing of the Atlantic?
Crossing the Atlantic ocean is a very special journey that does not involve super-human
efforts or particular sailing skills, you certainly don’t need to be afraid of it! It requires only
the will to have fun and to be in the middle of the ocean for some time. Don’t forget we are
backed up with the organisation of ARC, whos requirements for safety standards are very
high!

How does it work? What will be your responsability?
First of all, we will split into 3 watches (groups) of 2 people. During the day you will be free
to rest, to steer, to read, listen to your music, chat and fish, etc. At night we will use the
watch system, which will leave plenty of time for rest and a few hours to enjoy the night’s
sailing. The groups will always be trained to provide maximum security for everyone. There
will certainly be plenty of time to enjoy this beautiful ocean and learn how to sail a boat in
various conditions.
Your ideal previous experience would be to have participated in sailing holidays and perhaps
participated in night sailing before, but honestly this is not strictly necessary, although it
would be useful.

What to pack?
The list is short – a good sunscreen (minimum 30 sunfilter), non marking shoes to be used
only on the boat, a waterproof jacket, trousers and boots, a hat, sunglasses and personal
clothing. There is no need to have a lot of clothing in these latitudes. Everything will have to
be carried on board in one soft bag, neither trolleys nor any suitcases will be accepted.

Personal medicine.
On board we have a well stocked offshore First Aid box and basic medicines. However, if you
need to take medicine(s) regularly, please inform the skipper, with the method of treatment
and dosage of your regular medicine. Diabetic Insulin can be stored in the yacht’s fridge if
required. It is emphasised and imperative that you bring on board the necessary quantity of
medicine to cover at least a 2 months time period. If you think that during the first few days
you may suffer a little seasickness, please remember to bring your own tablets, as a
preventative measure.

What about the weather?
The weather is normally very predictable at the end of the year for the Atlantic crossing,
essentially the wind should be behind us, so we would be sailing ‘downwind’. With
temperatures ranging from 16 – 23°C the first 2/3 days on leaving the Canaries, rising to
temperatures of 32°C during the day and 25°C at night during the final 7/10 days prior to
arriving in Martinique. You will not be cold for sure, this navigation is famous also for its
perfect climate.

Let’s sail!

Going downwind, our strategy will be to jibe many times, that will take us to the West –
South – West off our course . We will use the Spinnaker with light winds and the Genoa
when the winds are stronger. To get an idea, the trade winds blow normally between 10 and
25 knots, with stronger gusts only during the rare rainstorms. So a sail without particular
worries, indeed, so much fun for all the crew and the helmsmen!
That said, we expect to cross our 3.000 Nm of big emotions in 17 – 21 days, of course the
time frame is all wind dependent. However, we also have the possibility to motor for about
50 hours in the event of a total absence of wind (less than 6 knots wind speed).
Mad Max is an excellent longhaul boat. Robust, fast and comfortable. In terms of security,
we have all the necessary safety equipment required for the crossing according to ARC rules.
New safety raft for 8 people, EPIRB in case of abandonment of the boat, new self-inflating
life jackets, MOB bracelets (Man OverBoard), Satellite phone for emergencies and to
download the weather and call home occasionally. Obviously VHF / DSC radio and UHF
receiver for weather reports.
During the passage we will provide you with auto-inflating life jackets with safety line, which
will be mandatory at night and with more than 20 knots of wind during the day, plus sailing
gloves and a head light for the night use.

Remember, our “All inclusive” option will give you an opportunity to fully
embrace this once-in-a lifetime experience, without having to think about the
galley.
